Blue is a traditional wedding color, and for good reason. It’s almost universally flattering—there’s a reason jeans are blue!—and it’s popular with both men and women. Blue also teams well with other colors, which helps in creating a color scheme for your wedding. Blue looks great with yellow, pink, mint, peach or coral, lavender…the choices of shade are endless. The only problem with choosing blue for your wedding flowers is that there aren’t many truly blue flowers out there. The most popular blue flowers for weddings are, of course, hydrangeas. But what if you don’t like hydrangeas, or you don’t think they suit the overall style of your day, but you still want to incorporate blue flowers in your wedding?  You’re not out of luck. Hyacinths are beautiful and fragrant, and little grape hyacinths or muscari are an adorable addition to spring arrangements and bouquets. Irises are another springtime blue flower, while delphinium can be used to create striking tall arrangements for altars and escort card tables. There are other blue flowers such as tweedia, nigella and scabiosa that your florist can use to great effect. Finally, blue thistles and blue-gray succulents can be beautiful additions to any arrangement.

This is pretty much the ultimate in blue bridal bouquets; it was inspired by Texas bluebonnets. It was created with belladonna delphinium, muscari, scabiosa, veronica, thistle and hyacinth.

Hyacinths are beautiful and highly fragrant spring bulbs that come in a range of blue shades (along with white, pink, purple and yellow.)  Grape hyacinths, or muscari, also come in a range of blue shades, but aren’t hyacinths as such. Both, however, are charming additions to wedding bouquets and arrangements, although the more aromatic hyacinths may not be appropriate for wedding centerpieces.

Deep blue hyacinth together with muscari, freesia, gypsophilia, hydrangea, stock and lisianthus makes a stunning bridal bouquet:

The small flowers known as grape hyacinths, or muscari, are also spring bulbs but are otherwise not related to the hyacinths above. They’re called “grape” because they’re most common in a purple-blue color, but muscari are also available in pale blue, white and pink.

Here light blue muscari are teamed with anemones, freesia and tulips:

Unlike the “other” hyacinths, muscari aren’t fragrant and are an excellent choice for a blue-themed reception centerpiece.

Blue thistles have become a popular way to bring both the color and textural interest into wedding flowers. This bridesmaid’s bouquet of slate blue thistles mixed with nude or pale peach roses and wheat makes an extremely attractive fall statement.

Blue thistles also look fabulous mixed with dark or bright blooms, such as in this bridal bouquet of blue eryngium thistle, Merlot ranunculus, cranberry orchids, cream roses, blue privet berries, seeded eucalyptus,  and burgundy & green foliage:

Bold & Bright Summer Flowers

Summer is coming, and that means gardens bursting with beautiful flowers. With the popularity of rustic and boho wedding styles, bold and bright bouquets and arrangements that look like they were just gathered in from the garden have become very popular. However, just as it is in makeup, it takes a lot of effort to look as if there was no effort at all. (Which is why you need a great florist like Bella Flowers!)  The results, however, are worth it. Bright garden flowers, lots of assorted greenery, and an organic, rather than rigidly symmetrical shape are the hallmarks of this style. Fruits, berries, interesting containers, and long, trailing ribbon ties are frequent accompaniments.

Brightly colored dinner plate-sized dahlias are one of the stars of the summer garden, and a couple of them, mixed with spray roses, make a bold and spectacular bridal bouquet when mixed with spray roses and other small garden flowers.

Smaller dahlias are just as striking in a mix of complimentary colors.

Other brightly colored summer flowers include poppies, delphinium, and, of course, the ever-popular wedding classics: peonies and roses.

Gorgeously bright orange poppies tied with fashionably trailing ribbons:

If you have your heart set on blue flowers, tall, showy delphiniums are for you.

Blowsy, ruffled peonies are a classic garden flower, as well as a beloved wedding classic. The mixture of different trailing ribbons and the loosely gathered arrangement creates the informal style.

We still have spring fever here at Bella Flowers’ blog.  This week, we’re featuring peonies, often called the quintessential wedding flower. Peonies are a spring flower, blooming in gardens in June. But brides are lucky these days that peonies are now available year-round, although they can be very expensive in “off” months. But peonies make such a statement you often only need a few in a bouquet or arrangement. Peonies come in shades of white, cream, pink, coral, deep red, burgundy and even yellow, which make them one of the most versatile wedding flowers. Peonies are as beautiful in delicately colored spring bouquets as they are in richly colored fall arrangements, which makes them perfect as wedding flowers. Peonies also traditionally represent good fortune and a happy marriage. And the ruffled petals of the peony are a wonderful foil for a beautiful wedding dress.

Bella Flowers frequently uses peonies for their wedding clients. Here white and blush peonies are combined with Dusty Miller, silver brunia,  Café au lait dahlias, white spray roses and white ranunculus.

At the same wedding, table arrangements mixed white and blush peonies with white stock, Dusty Miller, silver brunia, and peachy pink Ilse spray roses.

Some brides love color, some brides want an all white bouquet. This bride described her Bella peony bouquet as looking like “the softest white clouds.)

This is another nearly all-white bouquet by Bella Flowers, where white peonies were mixed with other pale-toned blooms.

Or, you can mix colored peonies with other flowers, such as in this bouquet by Bella:

Peonies aren’t all the same, either. Here giant yellow tree peonies make a showstopper of a bouquet.

As peonies are spring flowers, they look particularly appropriate combined with other spring blooms. Here white and blush peonies, scented lilacs and stock to are combined to create a remarkably beautiful, and beautifully scented, bouquet.

Spring is in the air—OK, it’s not really, but it’s been warm lately. It is however a great time to feature a gorgeous spring wedding with vintage style, held at the de Seversky Mansion. Now, it may seem as if we’re featuring a lot of weddings at the de Seversky Mansion, and it’s true, there have been more than a few blog posts featuring the mansion recently. But why not? The de Seversky Mansion is one of the NY metropolitan area’s premier wedding venues, and it’s easy to see why when you look at the historic mansion, the opulent grounds…yes, yes, you get it. And, not to mention, the de Seversky has the good taste to feature Bella Flowers as a preferred vendor.

One of the mansion’s most stunning features is its white marble entry hall complete with sweeping grand staircase. It’s the perfect place introduce your guests to the style of your wedding, such as with this vintage style urn arrangement.

p1331897417-4

The vintage feel is created with a cottage style arrangement of white, peach and blush peonies, fragrant white stock, dusty miller, spray roses, silver brunia, and the quintessential spring flower, cherry blossoms, cascading from the top. Sweet but also elegant: perfect for a modern (but vintage-style!) wedding.

The bride’s bouquet continues the soft vintage feel, with the same white and blush peonies, dusty miller and silver brunia, but with the addition of Café au lait dahlias and white spray roses and ranunculus.

p1331795083-4

The vintage-style bouquet beautifully sets off the bride’s delicate lace dress with sparkling details.

p1331821037-4

The groom’s boutonniere was made of silver brunia and a white spray rosebud with a touch of dusty miller. The maid of honor’s bouquet, however, incorporated more color than we’ve seen yet with Juliet garden roses and orange ranunculus, in addition to the same white peonies and white spray roses.

p1331812393-4
p1331824049-4

To continue the vintage theme, the reception table arrangements were placed in softly shining silver Revere bowls. Again, white and blush peonies were mixed with white stock, Dusty Miller, and silver brunia, with the addition of adorable peachy pink Ilse spray roses.

All weddings are romantic—unless there’s a shotgun involved!—but some are just a bit more romantic. Is it the couple, the details, or is it the site?  I think in most cases it’s the combination of all of them, but mostly it has to do with the obvious love and joy of the couple on their wedding day. And some gorgeous flowers don’t hurt either.

0474-GC-KH

This late summer wedding at the de Seversky Mansion had it all: a sumptous mansion site, sparkly dresses on everyone from the bride to the flower girl, and romantic, cottage garden-style bouquets and arrangements in delicate shades of ivory, blush and peach.

5774-GC-P

The bride’s bouquet was a beautiful arrangement of Dusty Miller, Juliet garden roses, ranunculus, feathery astilbe, dahlias, spray roses, stock, veronica…a veritable cottage garden in a bouquet. The attendants carried similar bouquets of orange spray roses, Juliet garden roses, ivory hydrangea, and white astilbe.

The outdoor ceremony was accented with white hydrangea and ivory ribbons along the aisle, and the ceremony site was decorated with white flowers delicately draped over a white arch.

0463-GC-KH

The large staircase arrangement and the centerpieces were also gorgeous garden arrangements of orange spray roses, white hydrangea, campanula roses, orange hypericum, thistle, green mini hydrangea, and flat eucalyptus.

Swanky Cocktail Party Receptions

Happy New Year, everyone! New Year’s Eve is a time for swanky parties with flirty cocktail dresses, yummy appetizers, and fun mixed drinks. If you’re planning a wedding, and this is your idea of a good time, maybe a cocktail wedding reception is right for you. At best, cocktail receptions can have all the good stuff of a wedding while skipping the less exciting parts—let’s face it, the best food at every party is nearly always the hors d’oeuvres anyway. What’s not to love about tiny burgers or tiny pies?

wd106548_win11_dessert002_hd

Martha Stewart Weddings

Basically, you’re removing the slower parts, like the sit-down dinner and the often endless speeches or video montages, and keeping the dancing and the mingling. Throwing a cocktail reception can be a bit tricky, you have to make it very plain that a full meal won’t be served or you’re going to have unhappy, hungry guests. But you can still feed your guests with a combination of served appetizers and food stations. Without the food stations, you could end up with your servers being pounced upon by a gang of hungry guests as soon as they enter the room. And make sure there is sufficient seating, as your great-aunt isn’t going to want to perch at a high cocktail table for three hours, and your best friend in her fabulous but vertiginous heels will want to sit after a bit.

The big trick, however, is keeping your reception looking like a wedding and not like just any party. Talk to your floral designer, who will have ideas on how to do just that. The right flowers make all the difference. For one thing, if you’re not getting married off-site, you and your intended will need a place for the ceremony. This California couple opted for a gorgeous arch draped with lavender dahlias and greenery.

Another California couple also went for an amazing ceremony arch, this one decorated with kale, artichokes and hanging amaranthus.

After the ceremony, you can move on to the party!  Tall tables for chatting and eating are important.

But sufficient seating is still key—people will want to sit, and you will have some guests who need to sit.

And then, have fun! Choose a signature cocktail, or appetizers that have meaning for you. Here champagne is poured over pink cotton candy for an elegant and amusing drink.

As for food: just enjoy yourself! The sheer breadth of modern catering offerings is enough to confuse anyone. Stick with what you like and what has meaning to your and your intended. Caterers can serve mini french fries with ketchup, party pies, mini tacos, macaroni & cheese, baked potatoes, meatballs…OK, now I’m really hungry.

Autumn Inspiration

Autumn is at its peak here on Long Island, and it’s impossible not to be drawn to the gorgeous colors of fall glowing right outside our windows. But when planning your wedding, autumn doesn’t have to mean pumpkins, sunflowers and sheaves of wheat—although all three can have their place. Fall easily lends itself to some remarkably sophisticated colors and combinations for your wedding flowers. From a fashionable palette of neutral and nude shades, to reds and oranges, mixed berry shades, deep and dusty greens, cranberry and blue, even blacks and moody dark purples, fall can be one of the most inspiring times of year.

Fall doesn’t have to mean bright colors; pale and neutral shades, sometimes mixed with greens or deep tones, can make a beautiful autumn statement:

While autumn usually makes us think of changing leaves, deep, verdant greens along with dusty grays have a surprisingly fall feel:

Shades of peach, orange, and brown are more traditional for fall, but that doesn’t mean they still can’t feel fresh:

Single Color Sensations – Monochromatic Bouquet

“Flowers are love’s truest language, and have the greatest talent in converting an ordinary place into a magical palace” – Author Unknown

variations

Monochromatic weddings can be beautiful, elegant, and whimsical. One way to create this theme is to carry a monochromatic bouquet in the color of your bridesmaid’s dresses. Your bridesmaids can even wear different shades of the same color to create more interest in your monochromatic theme.

You don’t need a million colors to have a gorgeous palette–you really only need one. Your bouquets could be bright or pale, but either way the result can be stunning. A monochromatic bouquet makes a bold statement. Choosing flowers in the same hue makes any bouquet a sophisticated blend of textures and style.  Monochromatic bouquets are ideal for both formal and informal weddings both indoor and outdoors.

Want to use a monochromatic theme bouquet at your wedding? Here are some great reasons why you should:

  • These bouquets look great against complicated, frilly gowns.
  • A simple palette allows you to get creative with the type of flowers and leaves you add to the bouquet without going over the top.
  • A monochromatic bouquet looks instantly modern.
  • A monochromatic bouquet is easy to coordinate with other elements of the wedding decor.
  • You can easily mix a variety of different-sized flowers in your bouquet if they are all the same color.

These are just a few gorgeous arrangements that will leave your guests in awe and asking “who is your florist”. Any of these will look unpretentious but luxurious as well. Monochromatic bouquets are a great option not just for a wedding, but also for any celebration.

Are you tempted to go with a monochromatic bouquet for your upcoming nuptials? I am sure you are — there are so many hues and tints available in all colors of flowers and greenery — the options are endless.
